Understanding Common Core
Teaching, learning, and testing are dramatically transforming our schools and elsewhere in the state and nation. That's because California is part of a national movement to adopt new standards and tests for English language arts and mathematics. These new standards are known as the "Common Core State Standards" (CCSS) and provide a practical way to prepare children for the challenges of a changing world. The standards keep the best of what we have but replace outdated learning methods with a clear focus on the key knowledge, and rigorous content students need.
California's Adoption of Common Core Standards
In August 2010, California adopted the K-12 Common Core State Standards to establish consistent English language arts and mathematics education standards. Developed through a state-led effort supported by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association, the standards aim to prepare students for a dynamic world by teaching real-world skills needed for careers and college. California is committed to providing a world-class education for all students, regardless of their background. It uses the standards to remodel its education system, focusing on essential knowledge and skills. While implementation will take time and effort, the standards ensure a shared career and college readiness goal for everyone involved in the education system. Overall, California's Common Core State Standards offer a practical approach to equipping students with the necessary skills for the future while ensuring a consistent and high-quality education for all.

Preparing Students for Career and College
Our goal is for all students graduating from our public school system to be life-long learners who will have the skills and knowledge necessary to assume their positions in the 21st-century global economy. The new standards are designed to be relevant in the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills students need for higher education and career success. Our communities will be stronger if students graduate with the skills and knowledge needed in today’s job market.
Will There Be New Tests for the New Standards?
California is a governing SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) member. The consortium is developing new tests to measure student progress toward career and college readiness.
California's CCSS Implementation Plan
Common Core State Standards Systems Implementation Plan for California is a living document approved by the State Board of Education in March 2012. The plan identifies the major phases and activities involved in implementing the CCSS. It serves as the blueprint for remodeling the education system to support student success in career and college.
