Congratulations to Mr. Jonathan Seligman, a music teacher at Joseph Casillas Elementary School, for receiving the highly coveted Country Music Association (CMA) Foundation's 2024 Music Teacher of Excellence (MToE) Award. The MToE Award acknowledges educators committed to providing high-quality music education to their students and communities. Mr. Seligman is 1 of only 30 educators nationwide to receive this distinguished yearly recognition, a feat that underscores this incredible achievement.
Mr. Seligman is an Asian-American elementary music educator born and raised in San Diego, CA. He’s taught at Casillas Elementary for nine years and built the music program from the ground up. He focuses on helping students find their voice through creative exploration and improvisation via music, movement, and sound design. In addition to supporting his students’ creative development, he engages with the diverse backgrounds of his students and provides them relevant literature to nurture their self-discovery and provide inspiration.
“Even days after receiving this recognition, I am beyond honored,” says Mr. Seligman.
“The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) program has empowered my students, giving them a platform to express themselves. The CMA's acknowledgment of our work adds a special legitimacy to our students' art. I am truly humbled."
In addition to this prestigious award, Mr. Seligman's commitment to music education and his advocacy, has won the district a $5,000 grant. This grant will support professional development and enhance the district's music programs, furthering our mission to provide high-quality music education to all students. We congratulate Mr. Seligman on this well-deserved recognition, as his dedication and passion for music education has truly set him apart.
