The Chula Vista Elementary School District welcomes and supports military-connected students and families.
Currently, there are 12 schools in the District that have more than 12 percent of enrollment identified as military-connected students. Four schools have at least 21 percent of their students identified as military-connected.

'STEAMing Into Health Sciences'
Grant Award
U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) awarded CVESD a $878,125, 5-year grant focused on supporting military-connected students at Camarena, McMillin, Muraoka, Olympic View, & Wolf Canyon. The grant targets instruction and exposure to Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Mathematics fields. In this grant cycle, only 21 of 70 applicants were awarded. CVESD was the only district in California awarded this year. For our grant, 2020-21 is a planning year, with 2021-22 through 2024-25 school years serving as implementation years.
Background
- DoDEA's (Department of Defense Education Activity) mission is to plan, direct, coordinate, and manage the education programs for eligible dependents of U.S. military personnel and civilian personnel of the Department of Defense.
- DoDEA's Education Partnership and Resources division strives to ensure all military-connected K-12 students have access to quality educational opportunities through engagement in partnerships with school districts and professional organizations.
Grant Goals
- Increase elementary school student exposure to careers in the Health Sciences
- Improve 4th grade student awareness and knowledge of Health Science careers and how these careers align with their strengths and interests
- Improve CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) /CAST (California Science Test) performance of military-connected 5th grade students who experience the Health Station, after-school STEM sessions and STEM summer camps

- Schoolwide access to Nepris, an online platform to connect with industry professionals
- Health Station experience (4th grade)
- After school STEM clubs for 4th grade military-connected students
- STEAM summer camps for 4th grade military-connected students
