Spot the Squishmallow: Celebrating Attendance Awareness Month at CVESD

CVESD Squishmallow Attendance Hunt

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is highlighting the importance of being in school every day and on time with the Squishmallow Attendance Hunt. From September 2 through 19, Squishmallows will be hidden across schools in the district. Because their locations are a surprise, the best way for students to take part is by attending school each day.

The Importance of Attendance
Each day in school provides opportunities for children to learn, grow, and connect with others. Consistent attendance helps students stay engaged in lessons, build confidence in their learning, and form friendships with classmates. Over time, these daily experiences create strong habits that support long-term success.

Understanding Chronic Absenteeism
A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10 percent or more of the school year. This includes both excused and unexcused absences, as well as suspensions. Missing too many days can interrupt a child’s learning and create gaps in both academic and social growth.

How Families Can Support Attendance
Families set the foundation for success by making regular attendance a priority throughout the year. There are many ways they can encourage attendance:

  • Prepare for the next day by setting out clothes, backpacks, and lunches the evening before.
  • Establish regular bedtimes and wake-up times to support sleep.
  • Talk with your student about what they enjoy at school to create excitement for the day ahead.
  • Offer positive encouragement for arriving at school each morning.
  • Stay engaged by asking about highlights from the school day and celebrating progress.

The Squishmallow Attendance Hunt is one-way CVESD is highlighting the importance of Attendance Awareness Month. Together with families, the district is working to build strong daily habits that prepare students to thrive each day.
