Shiny new bicycles and helmets will bring joy to more than 100 third grade students as part of the 2019 “Bikes4Kids” distribution in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The Bikes for Kids Foundation annually donates the bikes and helmets. CVESD employees volunteered to put them together at a special bike assembly, which this year took place on Friday, December 13. On Saturday, December 14, District employees and volunteers helped distribute the bicycles, fit and size bike helmets, and facilitated safety lessons in partnership with the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. The students who are served by Bikes for Kids are Title 1 students. Title 1 students are from families with incomes below the poverty level.

“I am so grateful for our employees and community volunteers who continue to give their time and energy to support our students and families,” said Melissa Minas, CVESD Project Manager. “The Bikes for Kids Foundation has been such an amazing partner. For the last 13 years, they have helped make the holidays brighter for many of our third grade students. Some of the students who received a new bike also learned to ride for the first time. We all remember the joy of first learning how to ride a bike, and the feeling of independence that comes with that.”
