State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Visits CVESD

In a continued effort to support student success, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond visited the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) on July 24, 2025, making stops at Valley Vista Elementary and Sonia Sotomayor Elementary Schools.

Superintendent Thurmond’s visit highlighted the district’s innovative approaches to academic achievement and social-emotional learning, as students start a new school year. He was welcomed by district leaders, educators, and enthusiastic students eager to share their learning experiences.

At Valley Vista Elementary, Thurmond visited classrooms where students were engaged in hands-on activities showcasing the school’s academic growth year over year. Principal Dr. Ibarra Roman shared how the school integrates instructional strategies to help students reach their full potential.

Later in the day, Thurmond toured Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School, meeting with student leaders and staff to discuss their Dual Language Immersion Program, innovative learning spaces and instruction, and enrichment opportunities available for all students.

CVESD Superintendent Dr. Eduardo Reyes expressed gratitude for Thurmond’s visit, stating, “We are honored to host Superintendent Thurmond and showcase the incredible work happening in our district. His support reinforces our commitment to nurturing the whole child.”
