The CVESD Board of Education has proclaimed September 2023 as Attendance Awareness Month. Did you know that it's chronic absenteeism when a student misses 10% or more of the school year due to excused or unexcused absences? When students are frequently absent, they miss valuable instruction, interactions with peers, and opportunities to engage in classroom activities that contribute to their learning and growth.
Chronic absenteeism can lead to lower academic achievement, increased dropout rates, and a lack of readiness for future educational and career pursuits. Our focus is on reducing chronic absenteeism to give all students an equitable opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Not only that, attendance is required by law (CA Ed Code 48200).
What You Can Do
- Ensure your child comes to school well-rested with a good night’s sleep.
- Allow plenty of time to get ready, get out the door, and transition to school.
- Have clothes, shoes, and homework ready the night before school.
- Bring doctor’s notes to the school office the day after an appointment or absence.
- Talk with the teacher or principal if your child is concerned about attending school.
- Respond to school messages about your child’s attendance.
With your partnership, we can ensure that each day unlocks a brighter, more promising tomorrow for every student. Because when your child attends today, they unlock tomorrow.
