CVESD Recognition Award

The Chula Vista Elementary School District received Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) recognition from the CA PBIS Coalition for 2022 at 14 sites. Schools were notified of their selection as recipients by the California PBIS Coalition’s System of Recognition. Castle Park Elementary School, Eastlake Elementary School, Harborside Elementary School, Lilian J. Rice Elementary School, Loma Verde Elementary School, Myrtle S. Finney Elementary School, and Thurgood Marshall Elementary School are recognized as gold reflecting excellence in the implementation of the core features of PBIS. Discovery Charter Elementary School, Greg Rogers Elementary School, J. Calvin Lauderbach Elementary School, and Saburo Muraoka Elementary School are recognized with silver. And Ella B. Allen Elementary School, Heritage Elementary School, and Los Altos Elementary School are recognized as bronze.

PBIS is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. In general, PBIS emphasizes four integrated elements: (a) data for decision making, (b) measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data, (c) practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable, and (d) systems that efficiently and effectively support the implementation of these practices. Six essential principles guide elements of PBIS:

  • Develop a continuum of scientifically based behavior, social-emotional and academic interventions, and supports
  • Use data to make decisions and solve problems
  • Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of problem behavior
  • Teach and encourage prosocial skills and behaviors
  • Implement evidence-based behaviors practices with fidelity and accountability
  • Screen universally and monitor student performance and progress continuously

“PBIS is a critical component of CVESD’s academic and socio-emotional programs," said Suprintendent Dr. Eduardo Reyes. "This distinction is a direct result of the hard work of all our staff in implementing PBIS with commitment and results. Congratulations to all our staff for this wonderful accomplishment and recognition."

At CVESD, we are focused on ensuring all students feel safe and welcomed at school and receive the social-emotional supports they need to succeed. We are proud of our staff and students for fostering positive school environment.
