Red Ribbon Week is an annual nationwide campaign observed from October 23 to 31, promoting a drug-free and tobacco-free lifestyle among youth and communities. Established in 1985, Red Ribbon Week honors Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a dedicated Drug Enforcement Administration agent who lost his life while working to combat drug trafficking. Kiki Camarena's tragic death catalyzed the campaign, inspiring millions worldwide. Our 45th elementary school, Enrique S. Camarena Elementary, was named in his honor in 2012.
This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is “Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug Free.” In the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD), schools celebrate with various activities and events to reinforce the message of a drug-free lifestyle. Our Board of Education passed a resolution endorsing the 2023 Red Ribbon Week, and red ribbons are distributed by the district to students and staff in honor of the campaign.
As we commemorate Red Ribbon Week, join us and share your child's school activities on social media with the hashtag #CVESDRedRibbon2023 for a chance to be featured on the district’s social media accounts.
