“Chula Vista Elementary School District recognizes the link between student health and learning and is committed to providing a school environment that promotes student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity for all District students.”

CVESD Wellness Policy (BP 5030)

In 2004, Congress passed a law requiring every school district that uses federal dollars for school breakfast or lunch to create a local wellness policy. A few years later, Congress passed the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which added new provisions for local school wellness policies related to implementation, evaluation, and publicly reporting on progress of local school wellness policies.

Race Track LanesThe District’s local wellness policy applies to every school in the District. The policy assists schools in improving the health of students by promoting physical activity and nutritious food. The policy was revised in August 2017.

School districts can play a critical role in curbing the epidemic of childhood health issues like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes which are directly associated with poor nutrition and inactivity.

WellSAT Analysis

WellSAT comparison chart shows how the district’s 2017 wellness policy improved in strength and comprehensiveness over the previous 2012 wellness policy, as evidenced by an analysis and comparison of the policies conducted by the Live Well San Diego Schools Team.

According to the analysis, “CVESD has shown phenomenal improvement, increasing comprehensiveness and strength scores in every section except Nutrition Education (NE), where scores were already very high. In particular, Nutrition Standards for Competitive Foods (NS) and Implementation, Evaluation, and Communication (IEC) saw the most substantial improvements... This underscores CVESD's position as a leader within the county on wellness and as a great example for other districts.”

CVESD Wellness Committee

The Wellness Committee of Chula Vista Elementary School District welcomes participation from parents, students, community organizations, school board members, and school and district staff from child nutrition, physical education, school health, student services, and school administration.

Local School Wellness Policy Triennial Assessment

Each district or LEA that participates in the National School Lunch Program is required to develop a wellness policy. Additionally, they must conduct an assessment of the wellness policy every 3 years, at a minimum. This assessment determines:
How the wellness policy compares to model wellness policies
Compliance with the wellness policy, and
Progress made in attaining the goals of the wellness policy
