When the Chula Vista Elementary School District closed campuses in mid-March because of the novel coronavirus outbreak, there remained a genuine concern for students’ continued academic growth and development. As the COVID-19 pandemic worsened and a physical return to the classroom was ruled out this school year, CVESD pivoted and turned its attention to providing distance learning for all students. CVESD prepped and distributed nearly 6,700 laptop computers to its neediest families.

To address that challenge, CVESD partnered with the City of Chula Vista in a model partnership to expand broadband access for needy students. Even with limited financial support available for this unanticipated community need, this partnership secured 2,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, and virtually assisted families with setting up distance learning stations at home.

Local community organizations EastLake Church, EastLake Educational Foundation, Cox Communications, and the City of Chula Vista have each played a role in supporting our community’s transition to distance learning.

Despite these amazing partnerships, a gap exists between the number of families in need of additional technology for distance learning and our ability to provide these vital educational resources. CVESD is turning to the community for assistance in ensuring that every local family has access to the distance learning tools they need to continue students’ learning and online interaction.

Help us by making a tax-deductible donation today to CVESD’s “Distance Learning & Educational Resources Drive.” Your generous support will be used to secure additional laptops, WiFi hotspots, and other needed educational resources for students and teachers in this unprecedented time in our history.
