State and federal laws require that school districts notify parents/guardians of minor pupils of their parental rights (California Education Code Section 48980.)

When used in this notification located below, "parent" means parent or legal guardian. This law requires that parents sign the notification form and return it to school. The signature is an acknowledgment that parents have been informed of their rights but does not indicate that consent to participate in any program has been either given or withheld. During the school year, other legislation requires additional notification to parents concerning specific activities or classes. A separate letter will be sent to parents at least 15 days prior to these activities or classes, and a student may be excused when the parents file a written statement with the principal requesting that their child not participate. The legislation also grants certain other rights spelled out in this form, which is attached.
