This October, the Chula Vista Elementary School District proudly celebrates Filipino American History Month by recognizing the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Filipino Americans. Filipinos have played a significant part in shaping California’s history from their participation and leadership in farm labor movements, military service, to their continued impact and influence on the healthcare industry. Filipino Americans have also further enriched the diversity of the communities in which they reside through, food, art education, and dedication to public service.
As a part of CVESD’s month long celebration, a few Filipino American staff members were asked what Filipino American History Month means to them:
“From labor movements to military service, Filipinos have played pivotal roles that are often overlooked. As a second-generation Filipina American, I am grateful CVESD embraces celebrating Filipino American History Month and for expanding our community’s knowledge and awareness,” says administrative district psychologist Dr. Lorraine Pacleb.
“As someone who grew up with parents who had to resist the pressures to fully assimilate to stay connected to their roots, this month is a yearly reminder that my cultural background is important and something to be proud of. Learning about and celebrating other cultures allows us to better understand one another, and that is how embracing diversity creates stronger communities,” says district web content manager and digital media specialist, Alethea Go.
CVESD understands that celebrating the cultures and heritages of the population they serve is vital to nurturing each student’s sense of self and in building strong communities, and so the district is honored to celebrate Filipino American History Month with their students, staff, and the broader CVESD community.
