What to Know for the Start of the 2023-24 School Year

This is the image for the news article titled What to Know for the Start of the 2023-24 School Year

The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is proud to welcome our students, staff, and families back to school on July 19 for the 2023-24 school year. In preparation for the start of the new school year, we have compiled important information for parents and guardians before school officially resumes.

All school sites will be sending out information to their specific communities regarding back to school activities, class information, and school supplies needed. Please contact your school site or the district office if you require further information.

District Calendar:

Attendance matters! Please mark your calendar now for important 2023-24 school year dates, such as school breaks and holidays. Plan around our breaks and holidays for outside school commitments. It’s crucial to ensure your student attends class daily. You can find the full calendar by clicking here.

Community Expo:

Learn more about our programs, what the district has to offer, and have a fun-filled day at our second annual Community Expo on July 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the district office. There will be interactive activities for students, district and community resources, and free food while supplies last. We hope to see you there.

Parent Involvement:

We value the active participation of parents in our district. There are many opportunities to get involved within our district and at the school site level. To learn more about opportunities to get involved at the district level, click here.

Communications:

Please familiarize yourself with our district's communication channels, including our website, email newsletters (CVESD Connections), and social media platforms. Our communication channels will inform you about district announcements, important updates, and opportunities for engagement.

Don’t forget to opt-in to text messages from the district! You can do so by texting “Y” or “Yes” to 67587. Also, remember to turn your email notifications on to receive updates for new flyers through Peachjar and follow the district on all social media platforms - @CVESDNews.

Parent Helpline:

If you need technical support for district-adopted online programs (i.e., Achieve 3000 and Microsoft Office), call our parent helpline at 619-409-6638 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note that you may need to leave a message during peak times, but don't worry; we will get back to you as soon as a technician is available.

Nutrition Information:

All students in our district this year will receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of income. The district will send LCFF forms to all school sites for parents/guardians to complete. Please be on the lookout for this form, as all parents/guardians must fill it out regardless if your student participates in our nutrition program. This form determines the amount of funding our district qualifies for.

Transportation:

The district can provide transportation for students residing beyond defined walking distances. For more details, including applications and schedules, please click here.

Before and After School Programs:

The district offers free or low-cost before and after-school programs operated by the YMCA across all our schools. Each school hosts the STRETCH or DASH program. For families needing childcare payment assistance, the YMCA's Childcare Resource Service can guide parents through funding applications. For more information, click here.

Safety:

We have established comprehensive emergency procedures for emergencies, conduct regular safety drills, and maintain open lines of communication with parents. We urge parents to update their emergency contact information and opt-in to district communications to receive safety notifications. For more information about our safety measures and protocols, please click here.

COVID-19 Protocols:

COVID-19 testing requirements are still required by law. If your student shows any symptoms associated with COVID-19, they must isolate themselves and undergo testing before being allowed to return to school. If you can provide documented evidence of a pre-existing condition or verified alternative medical diagnosis that explains the symptoms, your student may not need to isolate or undergo testing.

In the case of a negative test result, your student must remain at home until symptoms improve and they have been fever-free (without using fever-reducing medications) for at least 24 hours. If a student tests positive for COVID-19, they must stay at home for a minimum of five days starting from the onset of symptoms or the date of the positive test if they don't have any symptoms. The day when symptoms first appear is considered day zero. If an asymptomatic student develops symptoms after testing positive, their isolation period will be reset. All students are encouraged to wear masks during days 6-10 of their isolation period.
