  • Cell phones are discouraged at school.  Classroom and office telephones are available for student use in an emergency.  If cell phones are brought to school, students must keep them in their backpacks in the off position throughout the day.  Cell phones may not be used during school hours.  Students will be disciplined for violating this policy as it is a safety issue.  Parents needing to reach their students for urgent matters during the school day may contact them through the school office.  Pursuant to Board Policy 5131, "Cell phones that are see, heard, or used during the school day will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent."  Please discuss appropriate use of texting with students.  Students who use their cell phones to send inappropriate messages to other Chula Vista Hills students will be prohibited from bringing their cell phones to school and will be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures.

Inappropriate items brought to school will be kept in the school office until a parent comes for them.

School Dress Code

Chula Vista Hills has developed the following Dressing for Safety Standards in accordance with Chula Vista Elementary School District Board Policy 5132.

Any attire that may distract from learning or compromise safety should not be worn to school.

  •  Clothing should allow students to move comfortably and participate in P.E. and other school activities without compromising modesty.   (Spaghetti strap tops and “sagging” pants are not appropriate.)
  • Clothing that is too large, low cut, short, or reveals midriffs or undergarments, or have tears or holes are not appropriate at school.
  •  Closed-toed shoes with backs are required at all times.  Students are strongly encouraged to wear/bring tennis shoes as PE may be taught any day of the week.  No high heels.  Shoelaces must be tied securely so that shoes stay on feet.  “Heelys” (shoes with wheels) are not allowed at school.
  •  Clothing printed with inappropriate language, negative or suggestive messages, or advertising drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, or other inappropriate material may not be worn at school.
  • Make-up is inappropriate in elementary school and distracts from learning.  Students who wear make up will be asked to wash it off.  Students should not wear dangling jewelry to school.  Dangling jewelry can get caught or broken during P.E. and recess and may cause injury.  Students may be asked to remove jewelry for safety purposes.
  • Hair color (blue, red, purple, etc.) and styles that call excessive attention to the individual and distract from learning are not allowed at school.
  • Students may wear hats during recess, P.E., and other outdoor activities for protection from the sun.  All caps must be worn with the brim forward and should be removed indoors.
  • Staff members will remind students of Dressing for Safety Standards and call parents as necessary.

School staff reserves the right to make judgments on articles of clothing, mode of dress, or hair style which poses the potential for the disruption of learning and/or compromises a safe and orderly learning environment.  Thank you for ensuring that your child observes our Dressing for Safety Standards.
