TECHNOLOGY

At Parkview we are excited about how technology enhances and extends our administration and instruction.  Included in our vision is the capacity to produce technologically proficient students.  The commitment of staff and parents has made the acquisition of such resources possible.  A teacher from one of the district's two Computer Magnet Schools commented, "It is amazing the computer technology and resources Parkview already has in place in comparison to other schools in this same district."

To oversee the development of technology, Parkview formed a Technology Team, which meets twice a month to provide program direction, staff training, and site maintenance of our resources.  This team is comprised of four teachers, a technology aide, a member of the San Diego State University community, our principal, a parent and Media-Technology representatives from our district office.  In addition to utilizing site trainers, the team has participated in and conducted in-services with technology mentors from the Chula Vista district, personnel from the San Diego State University Education Technology Department, and Pacific Bell Education First.

All classrooms are equipped with at least one or more computers, tape-recorder/headphones, and an overhead projector.  Each loft is equipped with two TV/VCR's, one Tape-Recorder Karaoke/Boom Box, and an AIWA Tape/CD System.  The school has a designated Computer Lab with 31 Internet accessible computers, two scanners, a Quick Take Camera and a Proxima projector which allows the students to view a lesson as a whole group and then practice the skills shown on their own personal computer.

Defining technological proficiency prompted us to develop Computer Proficiency Standards.  These are presently in place for students in Kindergarten through the 6th grade, and are an integral part of the instructional objectives of our teachers who direct the laboratory.

At Parkview Elementary, computer technology is a valuable resource and essential tool in the school environment.  All classroom computers are connected via our Network Server amongst staff, and is implemented as a curricular area in the lab as well as being an integral supplement to classroom instruction.

The library at Parkview was the target for automation by the Technology Team and the Library Media Specialist.  After over 120 volunteer hours over the summer of 1996, the Follet Library Bar Coding System was in place and has served to facilitate the cycling and tracking of books checked out by students and staff.

Student proficiencies range from me keyboarding skills in the primary grades, to the development of Hyperstudio projects in the upper grades as an integral part of their end of the year assignments. Programs essential to our standards such as the Bilingual Writing Center, Microsoft Works, Story Book Weaver, Kid Pix, Ultra-Key, Wiggle Works, and Hyperstudio are integrated into various areas of instruction.  The teachers plan their technology lessons based around curriculum and grade level standards.  A technology aide is there to assist with the instruction and any technology issues that may arise.

In the past, Parkview has hosted two Family Technology Nights in order to provide a demonstration ground for technology in the school, as well as technological proficiencies of the students.  The first night was in conjunction with Microsoft.  The second was an opportunity for students and teachers to showcase electronic portfolio work and projects.

Our efforts toward recognition and/or grants for all we have accomplished is driven by our technology vision at Parkview.  For our future we envision:

  • Technology Partnerships
  • Funded Technology Position
  • Home/School E-mail
  • Electronic Student Portfolios
  • Community Technology Training.
