At the request of many parents, an "optional uniform policy" was started in October of 1995. This policy was initiated at the very first parent meeting held in April, 1995. At that time, we held parent discussions at following meetings, held a fashion show featuring our own Olympic View models, developed guidelines of uniforms, and had parents vote, implementing a "uniform policy." The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of starting such a program.
Olympic View parents were again surveyed in May, 1996. The vote was again overwhelmingly in favor of a "Mandatory Uniform Policy."
It is our belief, at Olympic View, that appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a safe and healthy learning environment. We believe that students need to concentrate on school achievement and behavior, and not on clothing. We know that dress significantly influences behavior. The school staff supports a "Mandatory Uniform Policy." If Olympic View has a "Mandatory Uniform Policy", it will help parents with the task of selecting safe, appropriate clothing, provide parents with a "scape goat", (the school), and help make Olympic View great! There's just something very special about seeing our students in their "red, white, and blue" uniforms!
According to Chula Vista Elementary School Board Policy:
1. The Chula Vista Elementary School Board must approve the policy.
2. Parents may choose to have their children exempted from an adopted school uniform policy by completing an exemption form in the office. Students shall not be penalized academically, otherwise discriminated against, or denied attendance to school if their parents so decide.
3. A procedure will be identified to assist economically disadvantaged students to obtain uniforms.
