TEDxChulaVista: Coming Soon!

TEDxChulaVista: Coming Soon!

Superintendent Francisco Escobedo discusses the inspiration generated by TED talks.

TED is not a “who” it’s a “what.” The TED conference is a global event bringing speakers and performers together to share “ideas worth spreading” with the community.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. However, TED events are more than just that! It’s about showcasing creative ideas from areas of inspiration. TED Talks have been given by individuals such as President Bill Clinton, to physicist Stephen Hawking. TED Talk videos have been downloaded millions of times, inspiring a generation of thinkers, educators, students, innovators, and leaders.

In addition to TED events, locally organized “TEDx” events are taking place around the world—ranging from big-cities, to small villages—and attracting thousands of attendees. The independently produced events, operated under a license from TED, are organized by community volunteers. The “x” in TEDx stands for “an independently organized TED event.”

The TEDx phenomenon will soon arrive in our local community. Chula Vista will host the inaugural TEDxChulaVista on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Southwestern College. TEDxChulaVista will bring together inspirational speakers, breath-taking artists, amazing performers, and thought-provoking leaders. The event will connect our local community to a global community. Major TEDxChulaVista coordinator Antwon Lincoln presents the vision to area leaders.sponsors include the Chula Vista Elementary School District, Southwestern College, the City of Chula Vista, Copy Link of Chula Vista, Balfour Beatty, Residence Inn San Diego Chula Vista, and Qualcomm.

“TEDxChulaVista is about sharing ideas in an innovative and creative way,” said Antwon Lincoln, TEDxChulaVista organizer. “Speakers, as well as performers, will take the stage with the goal of shifting the audience’s mindset to a greater awareness of community and global issues, concerns, and innovations.”

Featured speakers for this exciting community event include Jahja Ling, conductor laureate and former music director of the San Diego Symphony; Victor Navone, animator at Pixar and mentor at Animation Mentor; and Jessie Chang, world-renowned concert pianist.

Lincoln, who is also the instructional technology coordinator in the Chula Vista Elementary School District, is excited to have CVESD student speakers from fourth grade through middle school giving a TEDx Talk.

The elementary and middle school students earned the opportunity by virtue of winning CVESD’s District Speech Contest in March. The winners, and now TEDx speakers are: Ythaniel Marcus G. Tolete, Salt Creek, fourth grade; Joslyn Herrera, Valle Lindo, fifth grade; Evan Garcia, Wolf Canyon, sixth grade; and Makenna Davis, Mueller Charter, middle grade. The students drew standing ovations as they reprised their winning speeches at the March 7 Board of Education meeting.TEDx logo

“This is a chance for the students to expose their ideas to a local community on stage, as well as a global internet audience,” Lincoln said. “Giving students this opportunity empowers them to be a part of the sharing of ideas in Chula Vista—and the world.”

TEDxChulaVista takes place in Southwestern College’s Mayan Hall. TEDx is more than just an event, Lincoln said. “It’s part of an international phenomenon,” he said.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a “wish,” or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
