Peer Assistance and Review (PAR)
In early 1999, Assembly Bill IX called for statewide implementation of Peer Assistance and Review (PAR).  The purpose of this legislation is to improve the education of students by enhancing the classroom performance of teachers through ongoing professional growth. 
 
PAR utilizes California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP):
  • Engaging and supporting all students
  • Creating and maintaining effective environments for student learning
  • Understanding and organizing subject matter for student learning
  • Planning instruction and designing learning experiences for all students
  • Assessing student learning
  • Developing as a professional educator

Who may participate?

  • Voluntary permanent teachers who request assistance
  • Pemanent teachers who are referred due to an unsatisfactory evaluation
  • Teachers interested in applying for National Board Certification

PAR Goals

  • To improve teaching performance
  • To provide access to confidential, individualized suppport from a peer
  • To increase student achievement
  • To provide opportunities for professional development
  • To offer collegial, collaborative support based on best practices
  • To share the expertise of consulting teachers and curriculum specialists with teachers desiring assistance
  • To provide voluntary inservice for all permanent teachers

  • Ongoing personalized assistance and peer coaching from a trained consulting teacher
  • Modeled lessons by the consulting teacher
  • Assistance with classroom management and instructional strategies
  • Opportunities for classroom visitations and other professional development activities
  • Assistance with designing a standards-based program
  • Assistance for permanent teachers of combination classes
  • Assistance for teachers new to Special Education
  • Professional development for permanent teachers

PAR is entirely funded through State categorical monies with no impact on the District's General Fund.
