1. What does my child's daily schedule look like?
Grade Start/Dismissal
K - A.M. 7:45/11:05
K - P.M. 10:55/2:15
1-6 7:45/2:15
2. How early may I drop my child off?
No child should arrive at school before 7:30 A.M. unless he/she is enrolled in the YMCA before and after school program.
3. What happens if my child arrives late?
Children arriving late to school miss out on valuable instructional time. Please be sure your children arrive at school on time. Children who arrive after 7:45 AM must check in at the office. The health/attendance secretary will issue late arrivals green slips before sending them to class.
You will be contacted if their child has recurrent tardies. Tardies in excess of 5 in any quarter are considered excessive.
4. What should I do if I need to remove my child from school for an extended trip or vacation?
Independent Study Contracts can be arranged in advance for absences if they will exceed five consecutive days. This ensures an excused absence and assignments for the students. Please call the school to make arrangements one week before the start of the contract so the teacher has time to prepare the work. Your cooperation in promptly reporting absences is greatly appreciated.
Procedures for Independent Study Contracts (ISC):
• Contact the school office to receive an ISC
• Parent will fill out and sign the contract
• Teacher provides classroom work that will be missed
• Student will turn in completed work upon their return
5. What should I do if I need to remove my child from school early for an appointment?
Students are expected to remain on the school grounds during school hours. If you wish to have your child released from school during school hours, you must come to the office and obtain a release slip. For you and your child’s protection, students are only released to parents, guardians, or other authorized persons whose names are listed on the student’s registration card. Students will not be released by telephone requests. DO NOT GO DIRECTLY TO THE CLASSROOM TO COLLECT YOUR CHILD. Only the office may release your child.
6. How much does breakfast or lunch cost?
Meal prices are $1.50 for lunch, and $1.00 for breakfast. Children may pay daily, in the cafeteria, or buy meals in advance. Please make checks payable to: “CAFETERIA ACCOUNT, CVESD”. Please keep your child’s account current. Failure to do so will result in your child's being given a red card. A red card means your child will only be able to select from one "alternative" entree which is a cheese sandwhich on whole wheat bread. Students with red cards may also select from the salad bar, fruit bar, and milk/beverage bar. Students accounts that are overdue are charged the regular meal price for the alternative entree.
7. Are there crossing guards on E. J Street?
There are no crossing guards on E. J Street. The Keep Clear Zone in front of the school between the condominiums and the school's main entrance looks like a cross walk but it ISN'T. Students should not cross E. J Street at this juncture (with or without an adult).
Numerous busy streets and intersections bound Casillas School. Please review with your child the need for practicing good pedestrian safety habits and the child’s route to and from school.
A.M. Traffic: To assist our parents in dropping their children off every morning, we have traffic volunteers in front of the school from 7:15 – 7:45 everyday. Please follow their directions. We want to ensure the safety of all students as they arrive at school. The school drop-off zone (yellow curb) is not a stopping zone. If you need to exit your vehicle (for even a brief time) please use the school parking lot or the available street parking on E. J Street.
8. Can my child be reassigned to a difference classroom?
Each year we are usually faced with the task of moving a few children from one room to another in order to correct an imbalance in class size. Typically these changes occur within the first weeks of school, but changes may occur at any time during the school year. In the event changes do become necessary, we hope that we may count on your cooperation and understanding.
9. Does the school have a lost and found?
Each year, numerous articles of clothing, as well as lunch bags, items for sharing, etc. are left in classrooms and on the school grounds. To facilitate the return of the items you are strongly urged to stencil or in some way mark those items your child may lose. Items in the lost and found accumulate very quickly and, if not claimed by their rightful owner, will be donated to a charitable organization quarterly. We ask you to help us
not allowing your child to bring valuable items to school (MP3 players, jewelry, money not specifically earmarked for use on the day it is brought).
10. Can I call my child during the school day?
If you have a message to give your child, PLEASE contact the office BEFORE 12:00 noon. If messages are in by this time, the teachers have time to pick them up before returning to class from lunch recess. Voice mail is available for all school employees. Please see enclosed directory for instructions on how to contact your child’s teacher or other staff members. Cell phones are allowed on campus but must remain in students' backpacks during class time. Students are not permitted to use cell phones without teacher permission and may not bring them onto the playground during recess or break times.
11. Who should I contact with a concern about my child?
If you have concerns regarding your child, or a matter pertaining to your child, your child’s teacher should be contacted first. In the event the teacher is not available, the teacher will contact you as soon as it is practical. Concerns may also be directed to the office. The school secretary will route the concern to the appropriate school employee or staff member.
12. Does the school know who to contact in the event of an emergency?
The school office MUST have on file emergency information (green card) for each of our students. Please keep the office advised of any changes to this information. Equally important is the information on the white cards that every teacher keeps in the classroom in case of an emergency situation at school. Please note that the reverse side of this card provides an Authorization for Treatment of Minors. Parents signing the authorization give permission to treat a student at a hospital/medical facility during an emergency.
13. What happens if there is an emergency or disaster whil emy child is at school?
Our extensive School Safety Plan for emergency preparedness includes a practice fire, lock down and earthquake drill for staff and students on a regular basis.
A large-scale emergency preparedness drill is held involving all staff, students, and parent volunteers each year. In the event it is necessary to evacuate the school, students will be taken to the playground.
In case of an emergency that warrants a campus lock down, parents may pick up their child(ren) at the Family Reunion area located at the bus circle on the east side of the campus.
School personnel are required by law to remain at school for up to 36 hours after an emergency or until all students are released to family or emergency medical personnel.
14. What should I do if I need to pick my child up early?
PLEASE DO NOT PICK UP YOUR CHILD EARLY UNLESS S/HE HAS A MEDICAL OR DENTAL APPOINTMENT. Not only does your child miss class time, you also disturb the class. If you must pick your child up early, you must sign him/her out at the school office. Teachers are not permitted to release children directly to parents without office consent.
15. What happens if I change residences during the school year?
State law requires ALL STUDENTS to have an annual updated proof of residency on file. We appreciate your cooperation in this manner. If you move during the school year, you must let the school know that your address has changed. A new proof of residency will be provided for you to complete. Students who move out of the school's attendance area but wish to remain at Casillas must ask the office for a Zone Transfer.
16. How will I receive information from the school?
To facilitate communication we will continue our use of the Thursday School Gram. Every child will be given a special envelope that will be sent home every Thursday. In this envelope will be important information. Please review this information every week and sign and date the enclosed comment card. Return the envelope to your child’s teacher on Friday. Students will be responsible to replace a damaged or lost School Gram for $1.
Parents are also encouraged to use the school's website and to bookmark links that are important with respect to classroom activities, school calendar, and important information.
17. What does the school provide for my child in the way of instructional materials?
Students are issued books and materials needed for their studies. They will be responsible for all books and materials entrusted to them. The cost of lost or damaged textbooks will
be billed to the student’s family in accordance with School District procedures.
18. Are field trips part of my child's instructional program?
Classes often go on instructional field trips throughout the school year. A parent or guardian must provide signed, written permission to participate. Without authorized written permission, the student is not permitted to participate. PHONE PERMISSION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
