 Superintendent Search Process

The School Board of Manatee County is conducting a search for a new Superintendent of Schools to serve the district after Superintendent Dr. Roger Dearing leaves the post January 5, 2009. Dearing has accepted the position of Executive Director of the Florida High Schools Athletic Association.

Dr. Wayne Blanton, Executive Director of the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA), has been retained by the School Board to conduct the search. Blanton has conducted numerous superintendent searches and has a proven track record for working with school districts across Florida to identify highly qualified candidates.

In a workshop held July 10, 2008 the School Board made the decision to conduct a national search for the next Superintendent of Schools. The Board will advertise in a variety of targeted, national media to elicit applications from potential candidates which must be received no later than September 8, 2008. At that time, all applications will be reviewed by School Board members, Dr. Blanton and a Citizen´s Committee* made up of a cross-section of the community.

On September 24, Dr. Blanton will facilitate a Special Board Meeting where the School Board and the Citizen´s Committee will each submit a list of their Top 5 five semi-finalist candidates after reviewing of all of the applications. A final list of five semi-finalists will be then be selected by the School Board. In October, the top five semi-finalists and their families will be invited to visit the school district for interviews. School Board members may also visit the districts of the semi-finalists. The public is allowed to be present during these public meetings. Dates and times for specific meetings will be announced at a later date.

*The Superintendent Search Citizen´s Committee will be made up of community members invited by School Board members representing the Manatee Chamber of Commerce, Latino Chamber of Commerce, MEA (Manatee Education Association), AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees), NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), Manatee Community College (MCC), Sales Tax Accountability Committee (STAC), EdVantage Core Team, and a school administrator´s group.
