Sunnyside Elementary Student Gregory Sanchez led the Pledge of Allegiance. Students Sophia Fahey, Kaitlyn Werner, and Kylie Werner spoke on school activities. Sunnyside Principal Dawn Minutelli, staff, and parents presented an overview of the school's educational progress and future plans. On an annual basis, each school in the District provides an oral presentation or written report to the Board on demographics, state and local testing outcomes, Academic Performance Index and Adequate Yearly Progress, customer satisfaction indicators, and next steps. The Community Opus Project is a District initiative in partnership with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. About 250 students (a quintet is in photo with Board President Douglas E. Luffborough, III) receive music instruction during after-school hours at six schools, and 60 students in kindergarten hours. This year, in-school music instruction for all Grade 3 students was added at the six campuses.

School districts throughout California celebrate May 19-25 as "Classified School Employee Week." CVESD employs nearly 1,160 classified, management, supervisory, confidential, and support personnel. The Board of Education and the District Superintendent recognize that the District can be only as strong as the people it employs, and that classified employees (such as Facilities employees in photo at left) are truly among the District's greatest resources. Classified employees will be honored in various ways at schools and the Education Service and Support Center throughout the week, including a special digital video presentation.

Kindergarten registration began on February 27. Enrollment packets are available at schools, or you may begin the registration process by using our new online enrollment system. To begin the online registration process, click on the 'Read More' link that follows. All required documentation must be submitted in-person to your neighborhood school in order to complete the registration process.

Transitional kindergarten offers children with birthdays between September and December a developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with kindergarten standards, taught by credentialed teachers.
