CVLCC Students Raise Funds for Families a World Away

Students at Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School (CVLCC) recently hosted the “Super Big Give Charity Festival,” an annual school fundraiser that benefits students a world away. "The students had a goal of raising $8,000 this year and we surpassed that goal by $500!" said organizer Nicole Cázares Enriquez, CVLCC science teacher. Festival proceeds go toward the development of schools, irrigation systems, and other needs in the village of Domeabra, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. However, the school was also going to dedicate the $500 that exceeded their goal to a Haiti Relief fund.

The Super Big Give Charity Festival features sports and dance clinics, food, music, carnival games, and a silent auction. CVLCC students participate in the “O Ambassadors” program, a joint project of Oprah's Angel Network and Kids Can Free The Children. CVLCC’s O ambassadors, known as “The One Love Club,” work toward the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, learning about global issues and making a tangible difference in the lives of their peers in the developing world. Throughout the year, The One Love Club raises awareness about the importance of a holistic approach to development by focusing on the Millennium Development Goals.

Last year, CVLCC raised more than $7,000, which helped to construct a secondary school. This year’s festival theme was “The World Cup of Giving,” because soccer is such a unifying global sport and World Cup matches will get underway in June.
