In addition to Heritage and CVLCC, the group also visited the Exercise the Dream program at the Olympic Training Center, learning about efforts to improve student health and fitness. The educators were impressed by the depth of students’ subject knowledge and by the abundance of teaching materials in every classrooms. Among their observations: our public schools have so many more resources than their top private schools.
Site visits are becoming increasingly common. The District recently hosted 10 visitors from the Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu, Hawaii. The purpose of their visit was to view our instructional program in mathematics. They visited Harborside, Olympic View, and Otay. They appreciated the opportunity to visit the three schools and observe their different pathways in instructional delivery.
The District also hosted educators from closer to home. Two principals, the coordinator of second language programs, and the director of curriculum from Oceanside Unified School District visited Loma Verde, Montgomery, and Silver Wing. The focus of the visit was English Learners (ELs) and the instructional practice that is making a difference in teaching and learning for them. The visitors left impressed with the level of instructional rigor, support, use of technology, engagement of students, and teacher focus.
